This is the old granddad of custard ice creams. The base is used to make numerous variations; it is simple to prepare; and vanilla ice cream makes an excellent companion to just about any dessert you can think of. In an emergency, frozen vanilla ice cream can be melted back down to a liquid and used as crème anglaise, which is basically what it starts out as. Any leftover melted ice cream should not be saved, however. This fabulous ice cream can be kept in the freezer for several days and still remain soft, creamy, and easy to serve.
