It is thought that this jam gets its unusual name from a Mrs Dumpsideary. Finding there was nothing left to put on her toast, Mr Dumpsideary solves the problem by making her a jam from windfall autumn fruit and spices that he had in the cupboard. It is a very useful recipe if you have a glut of plums, apples and pears.

Ingredients

  • 500 g/1 lb 2 oz plums, roughly chopped, and stones/pits reserved

  1. Tie the plum stones, lemon zest, ginger, cloves and cinnamon in a piece of muslin/cheesecloth.
