Sloes can be found in hedgerows in the autumn, but the best time to collect them is when the first frosts have arrived. The frost breaks down the sloes, which helps to release their juices and flavour. You can gather sloes earlier and put them in the freezer to get the same effect; this may mean you get to the sloes before the birds do, too!
