I found this cake as I was researching cake traditions of the northern Midwest. I think of it as something akin to a tres leches cake. The butter in the cake batter will be fully submerged in the maple syrup mixture when it goes into the oven and then invert while baking so the cake is floating on top of a thickened maple glaze. I like to make this as individual cakes baked in ramekins, but it works just as well with less hassle baked in a regular baking dish.
