Crumble topping is one of my favorite things because it is endlessly adaptable to what’s in the kitchen—I’ve made it with just flour, flour and oats, oats and nuts, and on and on. This is my base recipe, and I’ll add in other ingredients on a whim. As long as the end texture stays the same, you shouldn’t have any trouble.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, and salt. Rub in the butter like you would for pie dough until the crumble holds together like a loose snowball when gripped. Chill for 30 minutes.
Use to top pies, or bake on its own by spreading onto a parchment- or silicone mat–lined baking sheet, and
