Beat the egg into the golden syrup in a bowl. Sift the flour, then mix in the spices, bicarbonate of soda and cocoa powder. Put this into a food processor (you can also do this in a bowl if you prefer) and add the butter. Mix together until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Add the chocolate, sugar, syrup and egg mixture, and mix until a smooth dough is formed. If the mixture looks too dry, add a teaspoon or two of cold water.
