  • About

Both my ma and my ouma were always making chutneys. If there were extra apples or tomatoes, or a surplus of any other fruit, they would haul out the sugar and vinegar and start chopping up the fruit. There was always chutney in our home, the perfect condiment or the perfect snack with a bit of cheese or with some cold meat.

Ingredients

  • 6 large ripe tomatoes
  • 6 Granny Smith apples
  • 3 onions
  • 2

Method

  1. Peel and chop the tomatoes, apples and onions.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a large saucepan and simmer for 3 hours on a low heat, stirring frequently, until the chutney has a thick consistency.
  3. Spoon the hot chutney into a warm sterilised jar, seal and cool.
