This is Maryke’s favourite chutney. She calls it ‘Ma Sylvie se chutney’ because my ma used to make it. Maryke and my mom were close and they spent a lot of time together, especially at the Franschhoek restaurant. This chunky pineapple chutney has flavours of cinnamon and chilli, but not too hot because Maryke doesn’t like things that burn too much, so the milder, bigger chillies are used. My wife is a snacker – she doesn’t eat a lot but she snacks all day long, and she’ll eat this pineapple chutney with a strong cheddar cheese when hungry. I know she misses my mother. It’s good that we have flavours to remind us of those we love.
