This comes from my wife Maria’s mother. It is one of the best soda breads I have ever eaten. Try it with smoked salmon.

Ingredients

  • 250 g plain wholemeal flour
  • 125 g self-raising white flour

Method

Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3.

Combine the flours, oatmeal, bran, wheat germ, salt and bicarbonate of soda in a bowl. Stir together to mix. Add the treacle and buttermilk and mix to get a moist dough.
