Imagine my surprise when I discovered that tomato rice is a Persian staple. Called Dami-e Goje Farangi, dami means steam rice and goje farangi are tomatoes. The use of warm spices like cloves, cinnamon, and black pepper, as well as the fragrant fresh mint, further convinced me that this dish has ties to earlier culinary traditions. I was further delighted when I found that my mother served it with half-boiled eggs and green peas, just like in Persian cuisine.
