Ideal for hot weather, merk hzina is the North African version of chopped salad. Maguy Kakon adds a minced small hot red pepper to the mixture. This salad is best dressed ahead of time. Just be aware that the tomatoes give off liquid as the salad sits, so you may need to adjust the seasoning. In Tunisia, a similar chopped salad is called slata jida and contains tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, green onions, lemon, and oil.
