Open a tin or bake your own? Depends, of course, on your time and taste buds. However, you won’t need any advice from me for the first option, so best to concentrate on the second.

Commercial brands are variations on Boston baked beans, which are quite sweet. In truth, most of these are okay by tinned food standards, if a touch innocuous. This recipe using smoked bacon, paprika and chilli will produce a rather more potent product and will partner duck, meatballs or pork as well as s
