Introduced by the Arabs, almond trees are very common in Sardinia, and in spring the white almond blossom is a breathtaking sight. I remember being at my grandfather’s house as a kid at Eastertime, spending the morning cracking almonds to make meringues, nougat and other sweets. We’d sit around on the steps cracking the almonds and fighting over the hammer. There were never enough hammers for everyone, and the smaller children who couldn’t get their hands on a hammer would hit the side of t
