As a youngster, I only knew the word ‘Forfar’ because of these amazing pastries, which I loved. I didn’t even know it was a place. These savoury delights are still very popular – I have a good friend, Laura, from Forfar, and every time she goes home to visit family I insist she brings back some bridies.

This recipe is good but it can’t compete with the real thing, and if you get up to Forfar look out for them. One family baker in the town, JAS McLaren & Son, has been making them
