Crumble originates from Second World War rationing, when you couldn’t always count on having enough ingredients to make a full pie, but nowadays they are a culinary celebration and I couldn’t imagine a chapter of puddings and pies without one! This recipe’s sticky-sweet plums are complimented with the oaty amaretti topping, for this perfect late-autumn dish. Oh and while you’re on the islands, this Gaelic phrase might come in handy: ‘Steallag eile de dh’ ughagan, mas e do thoil e!’
