When I lick the bowl once I have put a sultana cake in the oven, the memory returns of being a little girl, standing on a kitchen stool and scraping every last vestige of cake batter from the bowl of Mum’s sultana cake mixture. What did Proust know, with his dry old madeleines! Give me a moist, buttery sultana cake any day!
Mum’s sultana cake – like her tea loaf, scones and pancakes – was available almost daily, ready to be decanted from the cake tins when people popped in, when it
