  • About

Sloke, slake, or laver is a silky plant of a purplish-brown colour which grows abundantly on our coasts. The leaves are almost transparent, and of so delicate a texture that they dissolve easily into a clear jelly.

Method

The weed is brought home from the rocky pools and carefully washed to remove all sand and dirt. It is then steeped for a few hours in cold water, sometimes with a little salt, sometimes with a little bicarbonate of soda, which is said to remove some of the bitterness.
