Black walnut trees are native to North America, but unlike pecans, they don’t get the attention they deserve, in my opinion. I have fond memories of harvesting black walnuts with my mom back on the East Coast, and not-so-fond memories of processing them afterward. The shells of these nuts are incredibly tough to crack, so unlike regular English walnuts, black walnuts can only be purchased in bits and pieces. But this makes them perfect for baklava, where nuts are ground finely with spices a
