Until recently, specialists writing about Thai rices and problems involved in increasing exports often talked about the difficulty of ensuring that Thai jasmine rice was not “contaminated” by red rice.
Although it was originally viewed as a problem, rather like a weed, Thai red rice has now become sought after as a novelty food. It is pretty to look at and good to eat, slightly chewy with a grainy nutty flavor. It is available in many Thai groceries and specialty stores (see
