Our son Tashi’s playschool is the reason we ended up in Calcutta. His friend’s mother, Sanjukta, is from Calcutta, and we used to talk together about India while our children, then three years old, would play together in the park after playschool.
“Where would you go in India to learn about rice?” we asked Sanjukta one day.
“To Bengal, to Calcutta, ” she replied without hesitation. “If you like, you can stay in my mother’s apartment, she spends most of the year in Delhi.”
