Île de Gorée sits in the sheltered harbor of Dakar, a pink-and-ochre dot when viewed from the ferry that links the island with the city. Gorée was the original toehold in West Africa of the slave-trading European powers and as such is synonymous with the trade. The Maison des Esclaves (Slave House) on the island, built as a kind of intolerable holding tank for people waiting to be shipped out to the Americas, is now a museum. Nowadays, Gorée is a peaceful, beautiful village of fishing peopl
