Traditionally, balchão was regarded as a Goan Portuguese pickle that was eaten during the monsoon months when fisherman did not go out to sea to fish. Due to the use of vinegar, it would last for many months if stored correctly in a sealed jar. Today it is so popular that it is often served as a dish that is eaten immediately. An authentic recipe would include powdered dried shrimp, in addition to fresh prawns, but as they are hard to source outside of Goa, they are often left out completel
