Brunswick stew is as old as barbecue. Early British settlers in the Southeast cooked both kinds of food, and in that region the two are still served together. “A good Brunswick stew,” according to one venerable source, “is made of practically everything on the farm and in the woods, including chicken, beef, veal, squirrels, okra, beans, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, butter beans, vinegar, celery, catsup, sugar, mustard, and enough red pepper to bring tears to your eyes.” This version leaves out
