This is a strong drink. A manly-man drink. And it’s the pride of the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans’s French Quarter, or “old square” (hence “Vieux Carré”), where former bartender Walter Bergeron is known to have developed it in the late 1930s. Just like the historic hotel’s Italianate carousel bar, this drink can get a bit dizzying after a while, so savor it slowly, friends.
