If you like, swap butternut squash for the sweet potato. There’s no need to chop or process the canned tomatoes; even if you use whole ones, the simmering process will break them up as they cook. Chili is always better the next day; if you simmer this one afternoon (it works well in the slow cooker, too), then cool and pop it in the refrigerator overnight, dinner will already be done the next day.
