After working in Italy for a year, I walked and hitch-hiked through what was then still Yugoslavia on my way to Istanbul, taking a detoured hop around the Greek islands, sometimes working my passage by crewing on boats. Finding places to sleep was never difficult as many islanders offered their flat roof-tops for a few drachmas a night and I quickly learned to select leafy ones with fig and olive trees for shade and the prospect of a juicy bunch of grapes dangling over my head to munch on.
