This cocktail cousin of the Negroni reimagines the classic with rye whiskey, mead or apple vermouth, and a bittersweet kick of Campari. Local ties shine through in the use of mead and apple, staples of Massachusetts agriculture, while a flamed orange peel and infused cherry add bold, modern character to the drink.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the rye whiskey, mead or vermouth, Campari, and orange bitters and shake to combine. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with the cherry. Light a match, then twist and squeeze the orange peel over the flame. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, drop it into the drink, and serve.
