In Minnesota, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of Bootleg season. Born during Prohibition on Lake Minnetonka, this minty, citrusy cooler became a lakeside staple, masking spirits behind fresh flavors. Twin Cities country clubs fiercely claim its invention, making it as much a part of Minnesota summers as boating and bonfires.
In a cocktail shaker, muddle together the mint leaves, lemon and lime juices, and the simple syrup. Fill the shaker with ice and add the gin. Cover and shake vigorously until chilled. Strain into a chilled, ice-filled highball glass. Top with the club soda. Garnish with the mint sprig and serve.
