However old-fashioned, I love this kind of thing. It reminds me of Mum, a truly wonderful cook, who used to make her own version of it every now and then. It may seem perverse to buy fresh asparagus only to make it taste like it is tinned, but I think this is an achievement. Tinned asparagus has a great taste, as many seventies diners will vouch.
