Time well spent is a lunchtime pinching big khaki petals from a giant steaming artichoke, dipping them in pokey vinaigrette, sucking out the fat lobes and always moving towards the meaty treat that is the heart. I love eating this outside, where you can toss the petals carelessly over your shoulder into the flower bed - although I often miss and have to sweep them all up with a dustpan and brush.
