Abeilhan is a traditional, circular village near the sea between Montpellier and Béziers – originally, as in so many medieval Languedoc villages, the houses would all have been clustered around the château, with circular ramparts all the way round and an entrance gate with a door that was firmly shut and bolted at sunset. Those feudal days were bloodthirsty times, what with wars between nobles, marauding wolves and wild boar, not to mention neighbours, and this wall protected the villagers
