Spritz Cookies

This is another buttery holiday staple and an unsung hero that dates back centuries. Better still, spritz cookies give bakers the bonus of allowing them to become more creative or even adventurous, so they’re especially fun to make with children.

The cookie’s unusual name comes from the German word spritzen—to spurt or squirt—as the dough was traditionally squirted from a pastry bag with a star or other shaped nozzle. These days, there are cookie presses that do the job quick
