These are the standard Swiss Christmas cookie made by nearly every bakery and every family in the country. Buttery with a hint of lemon, the taste is a nostalgic reminder of childhood and Christmas for Swiss people throughout the world.
In the 19th century, the cookies featured at New Year’s parties in Basel where the Baslers called them Gaatoodemylängli, from the French gâteaux de Milan and served them with their famous mulled wine, Hypokras.
