White radish & beef soup


The smoky flavours of the beef are perfectly complemented by the sweet tanginess of Chinese white radish in this mild and refreshing soup with a slightly sweet edge.


  • 200 g/7 oz Chinese white radish, peeled
  • 50 g/2 oz beef
  • 15 ml/1 tbsp sesame oil
  • ½ leek, sliced
  • 15 ml/1 tbsp light soy sauce
  • salt and ground black pepper


  1. Slice the white radish, and cut the pieces into 2 cm/¾ in squares. Roughly chop the beef into bitesize cubes.
  2. Heat the sesame oil in a large pan, and stir-fry the beef until tender and golden brown. Add the white radish, and briefly stir-fry.
  3. Add 750 ml/ pints/3 cups water to the pan. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 7 minutes. Add the leek and soy sauce. Simmer for a further 2 minutes. Season to taste and serve.
