Place the wholemeal flour in a bowl, and sieve onto it the plain flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt. Mix together and make a well in the centre.
Beat the egg and buttermilk together, pour into the well and stir with wooden spoon, until it is a fairly soft dough (add extra buttermilk if needed). Quickly turn onto a floured surface, flour your hands and form an even round
