  • About

Popular in the mid-nineteenth century and into the twentieth century, Madeira cake is named for the fortified Portuguese wine that traditionally accompanied it. The wine’s taste notes of toasted nuts, caramel, and fruit pair well with the subtle lemon flavor of the cake. Both the wine, often served in a cut-crystal decanter, and the cake, would have been common additions to the Downton tea table.
