Prepare the mise en place for the soaker.
To make the soaker, combine the figs, raisins, prunes, pears, hazelnuts, currants, dates, and candied peels in a plastic container with a lid. Add the water and rum, stirring with a wooden spoon to blend. Cover and set aside to soak at room temperature for at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours.
