When we first rented a house on Hedges Lane in Sagaponack—a tiny area wedged in between East Hampton and Bridgehampton on the South Fork of Long Island—we used to get our mail and our basic kitchen supplies at the Sagaponack General Store. For fifteen years after that we went to Europe each summer, but eventually we returned to the bucolic charm of the Hamptons.
