Andy’s Aunt Dinah (her nickname was “Dink”) gave us a container of these nuts every year for Thanksgiving. Dink died in 1989 at the age of 95. She was one of the brightest and sweetest people we have ever known. Her wit and intelligence were an important part of many of our Thanksgiving celebrations.
Put the sugars and the sour cream into a saucepan, whisking over low heat. Cook until the mixture starts to boil. Cover and boil for 1 minute.
Uncover and cook until a few drops of syrup form a firm ball or a candy thermometer reads 245 degrees.
Remove from the heat and add the vanilla and the walnuts. Stir to coat evenly.
