Seasoned salt isn’t unique to North America. The Chinese version features the tongue-popping aromatics of black and Szechuan peppercorns. Szechuan peppercorns aren’t really peppers at all but a reddish-brown, peppercorn-size berry native to China’s Szechuan province. The spice has a clean, piney, woodsy flavor that’s unique in the world of seasonings. (The name notwithstanding, Szechuan peppercorns aren’t especially hot.)
