As a young woman I spent my first French holiday at a friend’s rented villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. A wonderful but temperamental cook worked in the house and the dishes she prepared were a new and thrilling experience for me. I wish I had paid more attention and discovered some of her secrets, but 1 do remember this very simple yet delicious dessert. Make this in the autumn when figs are at their best and most readily available; this little pudding can become a seasonal treat.
