Wipe the sloes and prick them all over with a needle. Half-fill preserving jars with them. Sprinkle sugar on the fruit. Pour on the gin to fill the jars and seal tightly. Leave for 12 weeks, shaking the jars occasionally. Filter into jars. This is at its best when about 7 years old, but may be difficult to keep that long.
