Here is another example of the insidious Greek talent for getting credit they don’t deserve. During the Greek war of independence, the combined armada of Britain, France, and Russia decimated the fleets of Turkey and Egypt at Navarino in 1827. In honor of this great victory, according to legend, a traditional French ragout of lamb and vegetables was named navarin.*
