  • 10oz wholemeal flour
  • 6oz plain flour
  • 1 level teaspoon Salt
  • 2oz granulated sugar
  • 1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 level teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2oz butter
  • 1 tablespoon black treacle
  • Scant ½ pint milk


    Sieve together dry ingredients and stir in sugar. Rub in butter, then mix with the treacle and milk to give a heavy dropping consistency. Drop spoonsful of the mixture on to a baking sheet dusted with wholemeal flour. Brush lightly with milk and dredge with flour or rolled oats. Bake at 450°F, 230°C, gas mark 8 for fifteen minutes.
