Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl and rub in butter. Add the sugar and dried fruit. Beat egg with the milk. Add most of the liquid to the mixture to make a fairly soft dough. Divide the dough into eight and lightly knead each piece into a round. Place scones overlapping to form a ring on a greased baking tray. Brush the tops only with the remaining milk and egg liquid.
