  • 1lb plain flour
  • 8oz currants
  • 8oz sultanas
  • 8oz sugar
  • 2oz mixed peel
  • 6oz lard
  • 1 tablespoon golden syrup
  • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda


    Mix all dry ingredients and mix in the melted lard and syrup, together with the bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a little milk and half pint water. Put into a greased eight-inch tin and leave overnight. Bake at 325°F, 170°C, gas mark 3 for one and three quarter hours.
