Rub the lard or butter into the flour and salt. Stir in the baking powder. Mix the apples with the sugar and stir into the flour mixture. Mix to a dough with the beaten egg. Put into a greased eight inch cake tin, spreading the mixture about one inch thick. Bake at 350°F, 180°C, gas mark 4 for fifty minutes. Cut open while still hot and spread with butter.
