Sift the flour and ginger. Rub in the butter. Stir in the sugar and bind with beaten egg and treacle. Form into small balls about the size of marbles and place on a greased baking sheet, an inch or two apart. Bake in a slow oven, 325°F, 170°C, gas mark 3 for thirty minutes.
