Sift the flour, salt, ground ginger, cinnamon, spice and bicarbonate of soda into a basin. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients. Mix in the sugar. Melt the syrup and stir it into the mixture, to make a soft dough. Roll the mixture between the hands into balls about the size of marbles and place them on greased baking trays with a space between them to allow them to spread. Bake the fairings
