Put the sugar, black treacle and spices into a saucepan and bring to boiling point. Add the bicarbonate of soda and pour the mixture over the butter in a bowl. Stir until the butter melts. Work in the egg and sifted flour and mix thoroughly. Knead on a floured board and then chill for thirty minutes. Roll out thinly and cut into shapes.
